In World War Two Germany, if the Nazis were arresting you, they would say, “Ausweiss, bitte!” , meaning “Papers, please!” ) If you had the wrong ones, they would drag you off, or worse.
The mis-named “SAVE America Act” is a voter suppression bill: very powerful. If it becomes law, millions of Democrats will have their voting rights denied
Under the Save Act, you must first register, which is not as easy as it might sound. You need a birth certificate or a passport. Do you have one? Do you know where it is? As many as 21.3 million otherwise eligible voters do not have easy access to their needed voting materials. (1)
Passports by the way, are not cheap, costing about $165. Also, can you afford to take a day off from work? You will have to go to the election office, to register in person. Also, it will no longer be legal to mail in your forms, or fill them out online — unless you register them first at the voting office, which defeats the convenenience purpose.
And that is just to register. If you want to actually vote, there’s more.
You must bring a government issue photo ID to the polls.
For most people, that means a driver’s license. But what if you don’t drive, or own a car? Roughly one in ten Americans do not drive — — and therefore may not have a driver’s license.
Here comes a real curve. If you are a woman, and you married a man, did you take his name? If so, remember, you cannot vote with it. Under the terms of the Save America Act, you will need an official name change. If you change your name, as did 59 million American women when they took their new husband’s last name, you must register it at the voting office.
How does this affect Democrats? Women are more likely to vote for Dems, by a substantial margin, roughly 7%. If women are disqualified, Democrats lose. (2)
But wait, there’s still more. Consider the officials who administer the vote. They will now be at risk. An honest mistake may mean jail — or deportation.
Is there a justifiable reason for all this?
In a word, no.
The threat of elections changed by mobs of illegal voters is just not true. (3)
But don’t take my word for it. Read the most up-to-date research. Prove it for yourself. There is no need — and no excuse — for this deadly new law. (4)
This is a bill designed to disqualify Democrats. It is complicated, cunning, and will add to Republican victories.
Why does President Trump call it his “number one priority”, and say that he will “sign no other bills” until this one passes? Trump himself admits the real reason: if the SAVE America Act becomes law:
“Democrats ‘probably won’t win an election for 50 years.” (5)
