Whether transmitted by radio, television or computer, America has a great need for balanced news — and how is unbiased news attained?
It’s simple; both sides must be heard.
That is why I listen to the Public Broadcasting Service. I know they will make an honest effort to present a variety of viewpoints, every time. Generally, that means both a Republican and a Democratic viewpoint; and that is what you get, on every news story with an issue. Sometimes one side will choose not to participate, which is their choice.
I feel PBS is honest: also, unafraid. It takes courage to challenge the powers that be, which they routinely do.
Without Public Broadcasting, we would have only the views of the private sector, meaning those who can afford to pay for it.
Those who support the President’s viewpoint have a right to hear it, which they easily can. They already control the White House, Senate, House of Representatives, and the Supreme Court.
Those wanting more from the conservative outlook need only turn to Fox News.
For liberal thinking, go to MSNBC.
But when I want “even Steven”, as close to even-handed unbiased reporting as is possible to attain, there is one place I can turn — and that is under siege.
Public Broadcasting gets roughly half a billion dollars in federal funding a year — not a lot in modern terms — but the President’s budget would cancel it out. (1)
