As you know, many elections are won by just a few thousand votes.
But what if one party had an advantage of millions?
President Donald J. Trump wants a bill to do just that give his party a head start of millions of votes. A bill with that power (the SAVE America Act) has already passed the House of Representatives. (1)
This is the bill Trump was talking about at his recent press conference, when he called the SAVE Act his “number one priority”, and said he would not sign any bills at all until the SAVE ACT passed. (2)
Why is he so desperate? Republicans will almost certainly lose the House and possibly the Senate in the upcoming midterms — unless they change the rules — which is what he wants to make happen.
The SAVE Act is built on a falsehood: that there are millions of undocumented aliens pretending to be someone else, voting under false pretenses.
Imagine if that was you — would you do it? Would you risk five years in jail and deportation — just to be able to vote two times? Of course not!
People just don’t do that, which is why the number of fraudulent voters is almost zero. For instance, in the key swing state of Pennsylvania, they had 32 elections over 30 years. This meant more than 100 million votes cast — but only 39 cases of voter fraud. (3)
Let me say that again. One hundred million votes cast — but only 39 “bad” ones.
Trump wants this bill because it could disqualify literally millions of Democrats. If Dems can’t vote, Republicans win.
If he can get this one bill passed, it will give his party an unbeatable edge. Vast numbers of women will lose their right to vote.
Here is how it works. If the SAVE Act passes, every voter will have to provide a birth certificate or passport — as well as a government-issue photo ID — and the name on that certificate must be exactly the same as the voting document.
If the name does not match, the voter cannot vote.
Why is that a problem? Because an estimated 59 million women (8 of 10) took their husband’s last names when they got married. That’s a name change, and under the Save America Act, it disqualifies you. (To “fix” it, you have to go in person to the Voter Registration office.
The SAVE Act could disqualify millions of women, which means disqualifying Democrats — because women vote more for Democrats (by a 7 point margin — 51–44 per cent. (4)
If the Save America Act passes the House and Senate, millions of Democratic-voting women will show up at the polls, only to find themselves ineligible. (If this happens to you, ask for a “provisional ballot” and follow through on the paperwork.)
Protect the freedoms we have now. As basketball legend Bill Russell said of citizen activism:
“Think — and participate.”
The SAVE Act is important — a looming imminent threat to voting rights.
